Jesus' wife mentioned in ancient papyrus

Jesus said to them, my wife...” are words written in Coptic language on a piece of a fourth century papyrus, which reopens the debate on whether or not Jesus was married.

This report tells us that professor Karen King of the Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, presented the finding Tuesday at the International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome.

According to the report, King said the words on the fragment, which measures about 4 by 8 centimeters, are the first in history to show Jesus referring to a wife.

King reportedly declined to name the owner of the papyrus fragment but revealed that it belonged to a scripture she referred to as “Gospel of Jesus’s Wife,” the report said.

Meanwhile, director Roger Bagnall of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in New York reportedly said in a statement from Harvard that the papyrus fragment “likely is authentic.”
