How to Install Firesheep

Firesheep (or Fire Sheep) is a Firefox extension that lets users hack into Twitter and Facebook accounts through an open, unsecured network. This procedure is for educational purposes only; user discretion is advised. We just want to impart how techie guys do it so you can protect your account(s).

You can also add in the comments section your own tips that everybody can work on.

How to install Firesheep in Firefox

First, you'll need to download WinPcap version 4.1.2 to get Firesheep to work in Windows:

• Download and run the executable.
• Follow the instructions on the screen. The installation applet will automatically detect the operating system and install the correct drivers.
• The WinPcap-based applications are now ready to work.

To remove WinPcap from the system:

• Go to the Control Panel, click on "Add/Remove programs" and then select "WinPcap."

Next, install Firesheep:

• Download Firesheep 0.1 and save on your desktop to easily locate it later.
• In your Firefox, click Tools > Add-ons; a pop-up window will appear.
• Drag firesheep-0.1-1.xpi into that window.
• Restart your Firefox. After installing the extension you'll see a new sidebar. If you can't see it, go to View > Sidebar and select Firesheep.

To uninstall Firesheep:

• In your Firefox, click Tools > Add-ons > Extensions and then click Uninstall.

Now, for those who want to protect their Facebook or Twitter account, take the following as our advise:

• DO NOT log in to your Facebook or Twitter account over open, unsecured Wi-Fi.
• AVOID using social networking sites at internet shops with unsecured Wireless Area Network (WAN) temporarily or until a workaround for web security is released.
• If you're in the US, and just in case you really need to access your account remotely, use Facebook’s new feature called “One-Time Passwords” on the go. Just text “otp” to 32665 from your mobile phone. You’ll immediately receive a temporary password that can only be used once and will expire in 20 minutes.

Protect your Facebook or Twitter account, yourself, from possible identity theft. Remember, Firesheep is so easy to install and use, and is potentially dangerous.
