How to use Smart Per Pulse Charging on Calls

Pursuant to the NTC directive, Smart has implemented the per-pulse billing system for mobile voice calls since December 6, 2009. Here's how to use Smart per pulse charging on calls.

To call per-pulse, the following prefixes must be used, plus the number being called:

  • Smart Gold and Infinity: *5433
  • Smart Buddy: *5434
  • Talk ‘N Text: *2255
Example for Smart Buddy: *543409081234567

A flag-down rate of P3 will be charged on the first two pulses (or 12 seconds) and P0.31 (for Talk 'N Text) and P0.43 (for Smart Buddy, Smart Gold, and Infinity) on the succeeding pulses of the first minute.‪ For succeeding minutes, P0.55 (for Talk ’N Text) and P0.65 (for Smart Buddy, Smart Gold, and Infinity) per pulse will be charged.

At present, rates apply to calls made within the SMART and Talk ‘N Text network only.

Windows 8 in 2010

One thing is certain, as 2010 rolls in, Microsoft will shift its focus to Windows 8, the next generation of Windows. Windows 8 is bound to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, Windows 7.

Windows8Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22nd, 2009, along with Windows Server 2008 R2, and both platforms made it to customers by October 22nd, 2009, with the client flavor of the OS being the last to reach the general availability stage. Undoubtedly, for the latest iterations of the client and server operating systems, the Redmond company will produce the first service pack come next year. There might even be a third service pack for Windows Vista, although Microsoft is keeping all details under a hermetically shut lid. But one thing is certain, as 2010 rolls in, Microsoft will shift its focus to Windows 8, the next generation of Windows.

Users are bound not to come across publicly shared details on Windows 8 from Microsoft for quite some time. Going out on a limb, I would say that the software giant will start unveiling the first Win8 information through official channels no sooner than the end of 2010, or even in 2011. After all, Jon DeVaan, senior vice president, Windows Core Operating System Division, and Steven Sinofsky, president, Windows and Windows Live Division, kicked off the Windows 7 engineering conversation with the public in August 2008, a year and a half after Vista’s GA in January 2007.

Make no mistake about it, Sinofsky continues to helm the Windows project, and Windows 8 is bound to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, Windows 7. Certainly, Sinofsky will not want to change what proved to be a winning strategy, considering the indications of Windows 7’s early commercial success, with strong sales, outpacing Vista’s by more than double.

In some way, the software giant is already offering Windows 8 tidbits to the public, albeit, all details available are insufficient to contour the company’s plans and strategy for the next iteration of Windows. As Windows 7’s successor starts coming into focus, Microsoft is looking for additional people to join the planning and development efforts behind the Windows project. In this regard, the company has published a variety of Windows 8 related job posts, which have been “harvested” by a variety of Microsoft watchers, including MSFTKitchen.

There’s one aspect that is already set in stone, so to speak, when it comes down to Windows 8, one that not even Microsoft can, or will dispute, for that matter. Windows 8 Server will be a major release of the Windows Server operating system, as opposed to Windows 7 Server, which ended up as a Release 2, namely Windows Server 2008 R2. Microsoft has argued that Windows 7 is indeed a major version of the Windows client, despite having Vista at its foundation, and 6.1 versioning specific of the evolutionary, rather than revolutionary development model chosen.

The intimate connection between Windows client and server releases, following Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 RTM/SP1, continued with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and is bound to survive with the building of Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server. But, in this context, it remains to be seen whether Windows 8 Server will drag Windows 8 along with it, and make it a new, undisputable, major version of the client, one that Microsoft won’t have to defend.

November 2009 NLE results SEO quest intensifies

The November 2009 Nurses Licensure Examination (NLE) results release is the most anticipated board exam results announcement in early 2010. The search engine optimization (SEO) quest steps up.

More than 95,000 examinees took the Nursing Board Exam last November 2009. Imagine the amount of traffic a blog or web site can generate if it lands in the first search engine results page (SERP), specially so if it will be the first one to post the results of the NLE in November 2009.

Not only the examinees will view the NLE November 2009 results, their families, relatives and friends will also look for names of passers of the nursing board in November 2009. The number of examinees multiplied by at least 4, which totals to 360,000 more or less, is the amount of web traffic to be gained by the site the day the NLE November 2009 results have been released. Huge, isn't it?

For SEO-inclined bloggers, to be included in the 1st page of search engines as far as the Nov 2009 nurses board results are concerned is a big thing. Even technology, environment, political, personal blogs have joined to compete in the NLE November 2009 results SEO chase.

That is why, when non-advanced users search for the keywords November 2009 Nurses Licensure Examination (NLE) results, NLE November 2009 results are released, Nursing Board Exam last November 2009, results of the NLE in November 2009, NLE November 2009 results, and passers of the nursing board in November 2009 in Google, Yahoo!, Ask or Bing search engines, they will be presented access to tens of thousands of web sites with posts related to the NLE results November 2009; www.coolbuster.net has released the results is one of them.

To all webmasters and bloggers who fully comprehend what I am writing about: good luck to all of us. Also, in advance our greetings would be congratulations to the successful examinees of the Nursing Board exams held in November 2009!

How to Find the Fastest DNS for your Computer

Trying to find the fastest DNS for your computer? We found an answer to your question. We discovered the method on how to find the fastest DNS for a computer for faster internet experience.

Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org) explains that the Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses.

The fastest DNS is essential for users to be able to have faster internet connection and to be able to browse websites and blogs effectively and error-free.

Here's how to find the fastest DNS for your computer.
  • Download namebench [link]
  • - namebench is a free, open-source bench mark utility that hunts down the fastest DNS servers available for your computer to use.
    - namebench runs on Mac OS X, Windows, and UNIX, and is available with a graphical user interface as well as a command-line interface.

  • Double click the downloaded executable file to extract namebench. No worries at all
  • - It's clean having scanned it with Eset NOD32;
    - It's standalone, does not modify the operating system in any way.

  • In the namebench GUI, decrease the number of tests to 100 to save time. Click 'Start Benchmark'.
The recommendations will be displayed once all servers have been tested.

My Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Audition Experience

Out of curiousity and so that I can blog about it, I joined the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) audition last March 18, 2009 at Gaisano Mall in Davao City and had a wonderful experience.

PBBI held this post until Christmas because the instructions given to us were (1) not to exchange numbers and text messages with the regional finalists if possible and (2) not to reveal to anyone except family or very close friends what transpired during the audition until the PBB starts.

But since PBB Double Up is about to conclude in a matter of weeks and I don't have a plan to try the audition next year anyway, disqualification will be an issue no more. I am revealing my PBB audition experience now so that those who are planning to try in the future will have a clue.

1st round:
  • I was given a sticker with a number and asked to sign a document.
  • We were grouped by tens for the interview.
  • Direk Lauren Dyogi asked us one common question - "Ano ang pinagkakaabalahan mo ngayon? (What's keeping you busy now?)."
  • After every person answered, Direk Dyogi wrote his choices on a small white board.
  • From our group, only 3 qualified to the next level.
  • Generally, more than half of the more or less 15,000 aspirants failed in that round.
2nd round:
  • Direk Lauren asked: "May nagawa ka na bang isang risky na bagay or task? Ano ito? (Have you done something risky? What was it?)."
  • I couldn't think of anything so I just invented a story. I qualified to the next level. From our group, only 2 passed.
  • Those who qualified were asked to fall in line and were grouped into tens again after each interview infront of Direk Lauren, some ABS-CBN staff and the cameras.
3rd round:
  • Direk Lauren asked: "Give us some reasons why we should take you in for the PBB."
  • That was the last stage of the interview. I survived that round.
4th round:
  • As far as I can remember, only 24 of us were left for the final round.
  • During this stage, Direk Lauren gave us a task which is to create a presentation.
  • We were grouped by age level and gender.
  • The teams can either dance, sing or act, or a combination of all.
  • Luckily, I had a group whose members were quick and smart thinkers so we were able to perform well.
After the last round, we had a photo session. The staff also took our contact information. The audition ended past 11:00 PM.

There was a liner from Direk Lauren Dyogi that I always remember and love the most. He said: "Mas gusto ko yung palaban, kasi masarap paglaruan."

So, if anyone of you would like to join the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Audition, you should bring with you courage, lots of smiles, and humor too. I think Direk Lauren likes a PBB aspirant who has a good sense of humor. Look at Melai now.

In the PBB, you don't have to be beautiful or handsome. You just have to be gutsy and witty. Take it from me.

Christmas Logo Making Contest 2009 Winner

We are pleased to announce the winner of the Christmas Logo Making Contest for 2009. Seventeen (17) entries were submitted, eight (8) made it to the voting phase and only one was chosen as the winner.

The panel of judges was composed of two (2) bloggers and two (2) well respected educators, all of which have the final decision that the winner is:

Entry No. 15 submitted by Melissa Nomrado, Cebu City

MelissaNomradoPlease check your email for instructions on how to claim your prize.

The verdict was based on the following:
  • Entry #15 is the only logo-looking design among all entries.
  • It has vibrant colors, a simple concept and the design fits perfectly to our blog.
  • The closest rival and voters' favorite was Entry #11. The votes it generated came from members of a boxing forum whom the sender, also a member of the forum, requested to cast for his entries. The pertinent post was eventually taken down by forum moderators. While we appreciate his effort and determination to win, we regret to inform the sender and all those who voted for #11 that the "Seasons Greetings" concept was already used by the winner of the same contest held last year and thus became redundant.
On the other hand, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude and appreciation to all participants. We hope to see your names in next year's contest.

This contest was brought to you in part by Blogfornoob.com - Random thought of a noob Blogger

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Supreme Court Upholds Creation of 16 New Cities

The Supreme Court reversed its own ruling last year on the citihood laws converting sixteen (16) municipalities into cities. Here is the list of 16 new cities in the Philippines as of December 23, 2009.

As the SC okays 16 new cities, the 16 newly created cities in the Philippines which were converted by virtue of republic acts are:
  1. Baybay City (Leyte) via RA 9389
  2. Bogo City (Cebu) via RA 9390
  3. Catbalogan City (Samar) via RA 9391
  4. Tandag City (Surigao del Sur) via RA 9392
  5. Lamitan City (Basilan) via RA 9393
  6. Borongan City (Samar) via RA 9394
  7. Tayabas City (Quezon) via RA 9398
  8. Tabuk City (Kalinga) via RA 9404
  9. Bayugan City (Agusan del Sur) via RA 9405
  10. Batac City (Ilocos Norte) via RA 9407
  11. City of Mati (Davao Oriental) via RA 9408
  12. Guihulngan City (Negros Oriental) via RA 9409
  13. Cabadbaran City (Agusan del Norte) via RA 9434
  14. El Salvador City (Misamis Oriental) via RA 9435
  15. Carcar City (Cebu) via RA 9436
  16. Naga City (Cebu) via RA 9491
This has increased the number of cities in the Philippines to 185.

Congratulations!!!

In its latest ruling, the SC said:
Respondent municipalities and the 33 other cities, which had already been elevated to city status, were all found to be qualified under the old Section 450 of the Local Government Code of 1991 during the 11th Congress.

As such, both respondent LGUs [local government units] and the 33 other former municipalities are under like circumstances and conditions. There is, thus, no rhyme or reason why an exemption from the P100-million requirement cannot be given to the respondent LGUs.

The Top 10 Computer Viruses of 2009

Here is a list of the top ten (10) computer viruses of 2009 based on ranking by Bright Hub. Site member Sategroup explains the details of the top viruses of 2009.

Rank 1: Win32/Conficker

This virus is a network worm and exploits the RPC sub-system vulnerability present in the Microsoft Windows operating system, allowing an attacker to remotely attack a computer without valid user credentials. Win32/Conficker infects the computer using unsecured folders, removable medium or by making use of Autorun facility enabled by default in windows. This threat contacts other domain names to download additional malicious code.

To avoid this threat, end users must update their system with the patch already available since October.

Rank 2: INF/Autorun

This is the most common threat that infects a PC by creating an autorun.inf file. The file contains information about programs meant to run automatically when removable devices are connected to the computer. End users must disable the Autorun feature enabled by default in windows. Since, use of removable devices is very popular, you can clearly see the reason why this threat has a rank of 2.

Rank 3: Win32/PSW.OnLineGames

This threat belongs to a family of Trojans that is meant to cause harm to game players by stealing their user credentials and other personal or financial information. This information is then sent to the intruder’s PC. Game players must remain alert as this threat has been found in large volumes.

Rank 4: Win32/Agent

Win32/Agent is a major threat to several end users as it copies itself into the temporary locations and steals information from the infected PC. This malicious code adds entries into the registry, creating several files at different places in the system folder, allowing it to run on every startup. This way complete information is gathered about the infected PC and then transferred to the intruder’s PC. As a protection measure, use a good anti-malware, disable Autorun facility in windows and do not click or open any unknown files.

Rank 5: Win32/FlyStudio

This threat is designed to modify the settings of victim’s internet browser by modifying the search queries and directing the user to advertisements. This threat seems to target the people of China. However, its presence has been reported in other regions like North America. It seems that the malicious code has been deployed by another family of malwares.

Rank 6: INF/Conficker

INF/Conficker exploits the host computer by making use of the Autorun feature enabled by default in windows to spread later versions of this threat. As mentioned earlier, end users must disable the Autorun feature.

Rank 7: Win32/Pacex.Gen

This threat designates a wide range of malwares that makes use of an obfuscation layer to steal passwords and other information from the infected PC. The ".Gen" suffix means generic i.e. the threat contains other variants with similar characteristics. However, other malwares may not share the same base code, but they do make use of the same obfuscation technique to infect the host computer.

Rank 8: WMA/TrojanDownloader.GetCodec

This threat as the suffix .GetCode suggests modifies the audio files present on the system to .wma format and adds a URL header that points to the location of the new codec. In this manner, the host computer is forced to download the new codec and along with the new codec several other malicious codes are also downloaded.

This means that the end user will download the new codec, believing that something new might happen, whereas, the malicious code runs in the background causing harm to the host computer. At present, there is no way to verify the authenticity of the codec being downloaded as a new enhancement or a Trojan horse, users must avoid downloading new codecs unless downloading from a trusted website. Unnecessary downloading of codecs should also be avoided.

Rank 9: Win32/Qhost

This threat copy itself to the System32 folder of the windows directory giving control of the computer to the attacker. The attacker then modifies the DNS settings redirecting the computer to other domains. This is done to compromise the infected machine from downloading any updates and redirect any attempts made to a website that downloads other malicious files on the victim’s computer.

Rank 10: Win32/Autorun

As discussed earlier, threats with the name “Autorun” make use of the Autorun.inf file to infect the victim’s computer. The only solution is to disable the Autorun facility enabled by default in windows.

Predictions for 2010

I'm no Nostradamus but there were times in the past that I was able to predict minor circumstances and prevented them from getting worse. Now I am sharing to you my predictions for 2010.

Boxing
  • The mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13 will not push through. Their match will happen in the later part of 2010.
Politics
  • There will be failure of elections. The new automated system (PCOS machine) will be the main cause of the problem.
  • The present administration will continue to govern but it will recommend a military-backed transitional government to be headed by former president Fidel Ramos, to thwart protests from all opposition groups.
  • Between May 11 to October 2010, ConAss will push through.
  • The ConAss will pave the way for the amendment of the Philippine constitution to either establish the parliamentary form of government or re-schedule the elections to a day in November instead of May effective 2010 among others.
Economy
  • Due to political instability, the peso will hit a record low of 60 to a dollar in 3Q of 2010.
Showbiz
  • A very popular showbiz figure, a comedian, will pass away due to natural causes.
I am pushing my vision to the limit. And I don't compel you to believe what is written here. Only God knows the future.

Mayon Lava: Demon's Hand (Photo)

My basic photo enhancement skill produced probably the scariest image for 2009 - the Demon's Hand. Originally posted at www.inquirer.net, the photo shows lava flowing from an angry Mayon Volcano.

This is the original photo at Inq.net with the caption: "RED HOT. Lava flows from the crater of Mayon volcano in Legazpi, Albay late Monday, prompting the evacuation of 9,000 families. Shooting plumes of ash into the air, the volcano had five ash explosions..."

Demon's Hand Inquirer
It looks simply as lava.

But when cropped and applied with more contrast, the red hot lava appears like a Demon's Hand. The skeleton effect is eerie.

How To Boost Globe Tattoo 3G Signal

This guide on how to boost your Globe Tattoo will make your Globe Tattoo Broadband internet speed faster. Learn how to look for a stronger Globe Tattoo 3G connection for a better surfing experience.

Globe TattooHow to boost your Globe Tattoo broadband 3G signal
  • Insert your Globe Tattoo Broadband stick to a USB port.
  • On the user interface, go to Tools > Options > Network > Network Type and then choose WCDMA Only.
Why do you have to do that?
  • Default network setting is WCDMA Preferred. When in WCDMA Preferred, the USB dongle can shift between GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA signals. If your Globe Tattoo Broadband consistently receives 3G signals, adjust the default network setting to get better speeds and stability.
  • Adjust the Default Network Setting from “WCDMA Preferred” to “WCDMA Only.” When the Default Network Setting is in “WCDMA Only,” the dongle will only shift between 3G and HSDPA signals thus giving you better broadband speeds and signal stability.
Important:
  • Once you shift between settings, the dongle will automatically detect the available signals based on the setting you opted for.
  • On WCDMA Only, USB dongle defaults to 3G/HSDPA signals only.
  • On WCDMA preferred, USB dongle will search for either GPRS, EDGE, 3G or HSDPA, whichever proves to be the strongest signal available in the area.
Access Point Name (APN)
  • Wrong APN Settings will not allow you to connect to the internet using your Globe Tattoo Broadband.
  • Default APN for postpaid: internet.globe.com.ph
  • Default APN for Prepaid: http.globe.com.ph

Google has launched a new URL shortening service for Google Toolbar and Feedburner. Google URL Shortener takes long URLs and shortens them to make a link that is easier to share, tweet, or email.

Google URL Shortener at goo.gl is currently not available for everyone's use but I think it's not going to take long.

Voter Registration Extended until January 9, 2010

The Supreme Court has extended voter registration for the 2010 Philippine elections and ordered Comelec to reopen the registration of voters until January 9, 2010.

Citing sec. 8 of RA 8189, the Court held that Congress itself has determined that the period of 120 days before a regular election and 90 days before a special election is enough time for the COMELEC to make all the necessary preparations with respect to the coming elections.

So everyone who were not able to register on the deadline last October 31, you now have the chance to register until January 9, 2010 for you to be able to vote in the 2010 national and local elections.

Bend the Trend climate change tool

During the United Nations 15th Climate Change Conference (COP15) last December 13, the European Environmental Agency (EEA) unveiled new Microsoft-powered applications; one of them is Bend the Trend.

Bend the Trend
Bend the Trend (I really like the rhyme and its cause) is an online global program that helps people make pledges to reduce their carbon emissions.

Information coming from the actual website says Bend the Trend is "a social climate movement whose aim is to inform and inspire people to engage each other to combat climate change." Anyone can become a Trendbender "by committing to a lifestyle change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

2010: Year of Phones that are Handheld Computers

As 2010 draws nearer, techies can expect a key year for communication technology with Apple set to launch a new iPhone, Microsoft to launch its Microsoft Mobile 7, and there's the Google Android 2 on the way.

Launched in China in October 2009, the Apple iPhone 3GS is now conquering the world's most populous mobile phone market and is set for a great start to 2010. But Apple even now is already working on the phone's next generation.

Matthew Bath, the technology editor of WHICH Magazine, says "You can't escape the fact that the Apple iPhone has absolutely revolutionized this industry in two years and whatever Apple calls its next version, which should launch in about July 2010, it's going to be probably still the most anticipated launch of the year."

The iPhone is not without market rivals. Most notably, Google Android is now offering a competitive operating system, with key applications and gadgets. This will be expanded in 2010, with the launch of Android 2.0, also known as Eclair.

As well as being Bluetooth-capable, the new version will include the option to have multiple accounts on one device, a search function for saved text messages and multi-touch support for the virtual keyboard.

Microsoft Mobile, which will launch its Mobile 7 platform next year is another growing contender.

Downloadable software means you'll be able to totally customize your phone. And with all these different software gaining popularity, it becomes simpler to check social networking sites from a mobile phone.

Facebook, Myspace and Twitter have all created applications for the various mobile platforms, which have proved to be a huge success.

"Mobile social networking is going to be a big story for 2010. These are mobile phones that are always connected to the Internet and they can pull together your Facebook, Myspace and Twitter feeds all into one interface so that you can constantly keep in touch with friends and family wherever you go," says Bath.

Being able to check social networking sites on the go, as well as being constantly connected to the Internet, makes a mobile phone feel more like a mini computer these days. Phones like the Nokia N900, for example, enable users to have multiple applications running at the same time.

Luke Peters, deputy editor of T3 Magazine says that lots of phone companies will be aiming for increased processing speed in 2010.

Peters says: "I think another main area where mobile phones are going to grow in 2010 is the actual computing speed. Nokia recently said that they, with their new N900 phone, they don't want it to be regarded as a mobile phone, they see it as a portable computer, that is a small, handheld computer, so with more processing speed, more RAM."

This means, Peter explains, that these tiny handheld devices can act like normal desktop computers. "You can multitask applications, so you can write an email and then quickly switch to Spotify, and then quickly switch to an online image editing application. The more power that a mobile phone has, the more features and applications you will be able to take advantage of in 2010."

A very popular application is Google Maps, which users can easily access on their mobile phones to find out their exact location. But it goes further than that, with the latest applications offering extra information which is directly linked to where you are.

Luke Peters refers to this concept as augmented reality.

"Augmented reality is an idea that came around really in the start of 2009 and allows, now that you can track wherever your phone is, whether it's an iPhone 3G or a Google Android phone, it means that companies can layer information over realtime video to show you exactly what's happening in your surroundings," Peters says.

"So potentially you could be walking down the street and point your iPhone at a coffee shop and it would say well Starbucks is offering you a free coffee if you come in right now. Or if you're traveling around a city and you want to know what a building is all about you can point your phone at the building and it will overlay real-time information just to give you some idea about your surroundings and where you are," he explains.

There are also applications that help you locate your friends by sending you their location on a map.

Matthew Bath confirms that the emphasis is really on software next year. "Again 2010 is a story of software," Bath says. "You're going to see a big rise in downloadable stores that enable you to download software to totally customize your mobile phone, whether that's finding out where you've parked your car to scanning barcodes in your local supermarket."

But do people really make use of all these innovative applications?

Nicholas Davis says he mainly uses his Blackberry Bold's satellite navigation function. Tony Taylor says his phone has a drum-kit application, which he really likes since he's a musician.

But Taylor's friend Dan Frasier-Betts says he has got the ultimate function on his phone. "My phone is a mirror," he says and holds it up proudly. - AP

Smart Bro Plan 999 2mbps upgrade

I was able to talk to a Smart Bro tech contracted by Smart Bro to install a Canopy antenna for Smart Bro Plan 999. He said, Smart Bro (Canopy) will be upgraded to 2mpbs and even 3mbps this 2010.

Smart Bro Plan 999 (fixed wireless connection using the Canopy antenna) is currently delivered at a speed of up to 1mbps while Smart Bro Wireless (Plug-it modem) is already at 2mbps.

According to our source who requested anonimity, Smart Bro Plan 999 will be upgraded to 2mbps for the fact that Smart Bro Plan 999 is emerging as the fastest and the best unlimited internet broadband service in the country, paving way for a growth in subscriber base which made company revenues rise significantly.

I will be emailing Smart to verify this and will post their reply as soon as I receive it.

Update 3/30/2010: It's official! Smart Bro Plan 999 has been upgraded to 2 mbps. Click here to read more.
