How to disable auto shutdown of Windows 7 RC

The release of Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 was great news for Windows operating system users and fanatics around the world. The download has been made available with some great new features and improvements in it. There is, however, one disadvantage in Windows 7 RC that has earned negative feedback even from non-users.

Windows 7
At the Windows 7 RC download page, under the "Here's what you need to know:" bullets of the download instructions, there is a reminder for downloaders to "Watch the Calendar".

The instruction says:
The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.
That one's catchy isn't it? Windows 7 RC will expire June 1st next year alright, we will not oppose. But turning a very good software into something annoying three months before the expiry date will surely get our thumbs down.

I have read in forum discussions that those who planned to try the RC already had second thoughts after reading that portion. All the others had negative comments and promised to wait for the full version instead of becoming RC testers.

Now, in our tradition of helping readers to find solutions to computer-related problems, we will research and test for ourselves the best method to disable the automatic shutdown feature of Windows 7 RC. For our part, this case will be unique. This is the first time that we will address a problem that has not even existed yet.

Inasmuch as we would like to discover the solution ourselves for educational purposes, we thought that involving our readers in this quest would be appropriate and necessary. It is on this premise that we enjoin everyone interested to join us by giving relative information. We encourage your suggestions and recommendations.

The time frame for our solution search is less than a year. We will deliver the goods before the auto shutdown starts to annoy everyone who installed Windows 7 RC.

Warning: Use of these methods and softwares is your discretion. We shall not be held liable for any damage these may cause to your computer. If you are not sure and does not have any tweaking know-how, please do not proceed.

Possible Solution No. 1:
Scheduled automatic shutdown of Windows 7

Possible Solution No. 2:
ShutdownGuard
ShutdownGuard prevents applications to shutdown, reboot or log off your computer. When it prevents a shutdown it will pop up in the tray and ask you if you want to continue. ShutdownGuard is compatible with XP or Vista. We have proven that it also works with Windows 7.

ShutdownGuard
ShutdownGuard will be tested if it can disable Windows 7 auto shutdown come March 1, 2010. We will keep you updated. [Download]

Possible Solution No. 3:
The 'Antidate' Method
Set the clock of the computer to year 2004 or something. It has been posted elsewhere that the expiry date follows the date set on your computer.
Lead: Anonymous

Possible Solution No. 4:
Get Rid of Windows 7 Expiry Date
Install the TimerNuke patch to remove the files associated with activation. It will disable related services so you can continue with Windows 7 even after the activation timeline is over. Just download the patch and install. [Download]

Possible Solution No. 5:
Use the Windows 7 Patch
The Windows 7 Patch has three (3) functions: (1) It is a Windows 7 Expiry Date Remover; (2) It will disable the Send Feedback button; (3) It will remove the Windows 7 Watermark. Warning: Installing this patch involves an Error 9999 issue per user feedback from forum. Advisable only for experimental purposes. [Download]

First, i have to thank you for allowing me to use your content in my blog. Nice of you!
And then, Thanks for this valuable information, i think the second option will be better as not every one can try to understand the tricks on the first solution. What is your idea about it?

Coolbuster Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Hi Bench!

As posted, the second option will be tested come 1st day of March 2010. It might become useless for some reason as we know that Windows 7 could be released later this year.

Thanks for dropping by.

hi, i have an idea, y can't just evry1 just set the clocks on their computers to 2004 or something since i read somewhere that the expiry date follows the date u have on your laptop.

Coolbuster,  Wednesday, June 17, 2009

That's a simple but good suggestion. It's worth a try.

you guys are genius, I think the Second and the Third Method look more earsire. but it worth trying all posible means than just waiting for it to just go off.

changing the date most likely won't work. I tried to set my clock for after the date and nothing happened. I don't believe that this will work, but maybe I set he wrong date.

I tried ShutDownGuard and TimerNuke with W7 Beta.
None of them works.
Great work, anyway.

Is there any way I can extend the expiration date of my W7 Beta to that of the RC?

Anonymous,  Thursday, July 02, 2009

1. Download the RC ISO
2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
3. Browse to the sources directory.
4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (pictured below).
6. Save the file in place with the same name.
7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

No, this would be silly!

If I set my date to 2004 I would also write news on Usenet with 2004 date, which would drive other users insane. Think first before you do such silly thing!!

Anonymous,  Thursday, July 02, 2009

Greetings again, I also wrote the previous post.

I've tested it and I have to tell you that ShutdownGuard will *NOT* work with my beta 7022 build. It's simply ignored by Win7b, and the annoying shutdowns will go on - so forget it.

Anonymous,  Friday, July 03, 2009

Heck yeah, my third post in a sequence. But this problem has really kept me busy so I'm now using the ugly (but working) system date method. And hooray, it works with my build (7022). Cold-reset the machine, and *immediately* scheduled a task which runs a BAT file that sets system date back and forth for 3-4 minutes (just to be safe) every 2 hours. Idiotic, I hear you say. But at least doesn't take some of my time I currently don't have to reinstall everything. No thanks. =)

Coolbuster Friday, July 03, 2009

@Anonymous thanks for your input. So we see that the System Method works for you. Congrats!

Arvisong,  Monday, July 13, 2009

Try Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. It works fine (if you're a the developer type of nerd). I've been using it for months and helped me a thousand times while fixing windows based PCs. It can run windows applications too (by using WINE). You can install it inside windows 7 RC. When the expiration date for RC comes, Ubuntu will save the day (it comes with cool desktop graphics too).

When we determine the actual time (whether it will be on the hour or at some strange interval) we create a scheduled task to run the file Abort.cmd which contains the text "shutdown -a" (without quotes) and if necessary put it in multiple times to make sure it catches the shutdown and stops it.

REDRAPTOR,  Sunday, July 19, 2009

well, 5, 4 and 2 do not work, i dont see how 1 could work at all, and 3 seems a bit problematic

Anonymous,  Friday, July 24, 2009

does the problem solution 2 applies to windows 7 beta version as well..

Manish kasera IIT ROORKEE:

make a web page having a script which opens a dialogue box requiring affirmation from user.
then open the web page and keep running it forever.
when windows goes for auto shutdown that dilogue will prevent it from doing so.So,windows will tell that a program is preventing windows from shutdown.

click cancel and go to work.

Anonymous,  Monday, August 17, 2009

Best way to keep it active in my humble opinion is to turn off automatic updates as i am sure one of those so called test updates will be what makes the shutdowns start and finally make it not work at all ....just a guess.

Anonymous,  Tuesday, August 18, 2009

I think changing clock on windows will not make any difference. probably windows check date from time in BIOS. So probably changing date and year from BIOS will make a difference.

Sinisa Monday, August 24, 2009

Guys,my Windows 7 RC black edition build 7000 by Benjamin has already expired, and auto shutdown problem was already start...so if any method help,i will let you know...(by the way, after any shutdown background desktop image is sat up to black (none))

Anonymous,  Tuesday, September 01, 2009

Hey Sinisa, I read that opening a microsoft word window and leaving it running will prevent the shutdowns. Can you check that as well? Many thanks.

set my date back and used timer nuke on the beta which expired long ago... and it works just fine...

ashton Thursday, November 05, 2009

I've tried all the above options for build 6801, the only one that actually worked was the setting my windows time to 2004, now the only problem with that is many programs won't work correctly when the system time is not correct, such as google talk for instance or Firefox will keep giving you the this site is untrusted page for many site, because the expiration date of the site certificates are way ahead, according to your time. the timer nuke did in fact remove the "this copy of windows is not genuine, but did not stop the auto shutdowns. The shutdown guard did absolutely nothing when it came down to the shutdowns. the patch didn't work either and the scheduled automatic shutdown really isn't that much of help, it works for maybe an hour longer making it shut down every 3 hours but did not stop the shutdowns, either way I'll keep searching for more ways to fix this problem, because reinstalling everything is such a pain

Coolbuster Thursday, November 05, 2009

Hi ashton, thanks for the feedback. Good luck on searching. We encourage you to share here if you'll be able to find the right effective solution.
