LinkWithin Related Stories (Posts) Widget "How to install in Blogger"

LinkWithin is a widget that links to related stories from your archive under each story on your blog. This widget links to stories that are relevant and interesting to readers of a particular story, keeping them engaged with your blog, and therefore increasing page views and traffic.

As you all know, this blog's tradition is to share to its readers our knowledge in tweaking, be it on certain applications or softwares and even on templates. What we are sharing now are two methods of installing LinkWithin in your blog.

Method No. 1: Normal installation for blogs using unmodified template.

1. Go to www.linkwithin.com.
2. In the boxes provided for, put your email, blog link and platform (Blogger).
3. Click "Get Widget". A new page will open.
4. Click "Install Widget" to open Blogger in a new window, and follow steps 2 and 3 in that window. Login if required.
5. Select a blog if you have more than one, then click "Add Widget".
6. Click Save.
7. In your Blogger Layout, drag and place the LinkWithin element to the bottomest part to ensure that page loading is not affected. The reason is that LinkWithin will gather relevant information and thumbnails which might take a few seconds, but of course it depends on the connection speed of your visitor. Don't worry because everything in it is hidden so it isn't going to disarrange your template.
8. Save and you're good to go.

Method No. 2: Advanced installation for blogs using modified template, particularly those with "Read More" installed.

Note: This is very important as it will show the Related Stories and thumbnails under your post after clicking "Read More" and not under "Read More" while it is on the "summary" state, so please follow carefully.

1. Go to www.linkwithin.com.
2. In the boxes provided for, put your email, blog link and platform (Blogger).
3. Click "Get Widget". A new page will open.
4. Click "Install Widget" to open Blogger in a new window. Login if required.
5. Unlike in Method No. 1, you don't have to click "Add Widget". Instead, click and expand "Edit Content".
6. Take note of the LinkWithin Site ID assigned to your widget. Write it on a piece of paper if desired.
7. Now, in your Blogger Layout page, go to "Edit HTML" and click "Expand Widget Templates".
8. Look for <div class='post-footer'> (press Ctrl+F to find) and paste the following code ABOVE it:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<div>
<!-- LinkWithin Widget BEGIN -->
<script type='text/javascript'>
var linkwithin_site_id = [LinkWithin Site ID];
(function () {
var elem = document.createElement('script');
elem.type = 'text/javascript';
elem.src = 'http://www.linkwithin.com/widget.js?rand=' + Math.random();
document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(elem);
})();
</script>
<a href='http://www.linkwithin.com/'><img alt='Related Stories Widget by LinkWithin' src='http://www.linkwithin.com/pixel.png' style='border: 0'/></a>
<!-- LinkWithin Widget END -->
</div></b:if>
9. Replace [LinkWithin Site ID] with your own Site ID in #6.

10. Click "Save Template" and you're done.

The LinkWithin widget is free and ad-free. No signup required! By the way, if something went wrong in Method No. 1, LinkWithin has a link for reporting your problems. It's on their website.

I hope you are successful on the second method because we were, as evidenced by the related stories and thumbnails shown after this post.

how long does it take for the related posts to show up? i just added it (via method 2) and it hasn't shown yet...

Hi there!

I saw your blog and the widget looks just fine. Your's does not have the "Read More" feature so the 1st option will work. I hope it is what you did.

Loreathan Wednesday, May 06, 2009

First of all thank you for the great tutorial. I have a problem which is; on the last two posts on my blog, the widget only shows the Title of related posts(its not because they do not have a picture to show, they have) and also it shows a link to a post that I deleted long time ago?I tried to install the widget several times but that didn't solve it. Please let me know what I should do.

my blog is at http://loreathan.blogspot.com

Thank you in advance

Coolbuster,  Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Hi @Loreathan.

It also happens to most blogs with the Linkwithin widget installed. I think that is their way of limiting the bandwidth allocation everytime widgets are loaded in one web page; especially so if you have plenty of posts in one page. Think of the bandwidth consumed for thumbnails compared to just text links.

That is only my own point of view. I cannot actually speak on their behalf so contacting them is the best option.

How do you change the color of the text "YOU MIGHT LIKE THESE STORIES"? I hardly see it.

Coolbuster,  Thursday, May 21, 2009

@HOMER, it's automatically configured by LinkWithin. Try to go to their website and send a message to admin.

Hi! Thanks for the tutorial.
Man, I even did the advanced option, but I'm still having trouble with it... it shows up and everything but has links to a totally different website (I checked my site id and it's the same everytime) but it shows a link to a major website that has to do with my blog... almost like a sponsor.. what can be the case?

Coolbuster,  Sunday, June 07, 2009

Hi JohnC, try to completely remove the code from your template. and then do method no. 1 not the advanced. get the code from the linkwithin website. if trouble persists, send a message to customer assistance, they reply within 24 hours through email.

I hope it will help. Regards.

Mary Tuesday, July 28, 2009

Hi your blog is great! Can you tell me is there a way to stop the linkwithin to stop showing deleted posts? Is it because of Blogger? Any help would be great thanks.

Coolbuster Tuesday, July 28, 2009

hi Mary, the best thing to do is to email support@linkwithin.com for your concerns. thanks for visiting.

Patty Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Anybody know how to remove the linkwithin widget from my blog? It seems it's making it difficult for my blog readers to open my blog. I've emailed their support and not heard back. thanks, Patty

Coolbuster,  Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Hi Patty, what method did you use in installing the LinkWithin widget? Thanks for your inquiry btw.

Patty Bennett Thursday, July 30, 2009

I went to their homepage and filled in my email, website and that I use typepad and clicked install or whatever that next step was and I think it was instantly that it was all installed on my blog. I don't remember doing anything else.

Coolbuster,  Thursday, July 30, 2009

Hi again Patty. I've visited your blog and did not find any problem. I am not familiar with Typepad. However, if you still want to remove the code, please find the following before the </body> tag and delete it.

<script>

<!-- //LinkWithinCodeStart

    var linkwithin_site_id = 16064;

    (function () {

        var elem = document.createElement('script');

        elem.type = 'text/javascript';

        elem.src = 'http://www.linkwithin.com/widget.js?rand=' + Math.random();

        document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(elem);

     })(); //LinkWithinCodeEnd

-->

</script>

<a href="http://www.linkwithin.com/"><img src="http://www.linkwithin.com/pixel.png" alt="Blog Widget by LinkWithin" style="border: 0" /></a>

Hope that solves it.

Patty Bennett Thursday, July 30, 2009

Thanks, but I was wondering how to elminate their service on my blog all together? It sounds like I would need to do that on each post?

Coolbuster,  Thursday, July 30, 2009

No. Once you delete the code, all those will not show up anymore.

Patty Bennett Thursday, July 30, 2009

Well, I didn't find that code.. sorry to be so dense... are you saying it would be in the HTML part of one of my posts?

Coolbuster,  Thursday, July 30, 2009

not of your post but of the template. go to the HTML editing and find the code thru CTRL + F and type in the search box "LinkWithin" w/o the quotes.

Sheila Thursday, August 06, 2009

My LinkWithin seems to have disappeared without trace - and I can't get to the site itself now.

The Envoy Saturday, August 22, 2009

I added the linkwithin widget to my site just using the simple getwidget button. I am using blogger. Site: http://througheyesfromafar.blogspot.com/

I want the related posts widget to only show up after the reader clicks the "read more" button, so I deleted the page element from my layout and pasted the linkwithin code to selected posts.
However, now the related posts widget is still on my main page even after I deleted the page element. I found no linkwithin code on my html template either. What can I do to remove the linkwithin widget?

Coolbuster,  Saturday, August 22, 2009

Hello @The Envoy, I've checked your blog. You have to find and delete the following codes below the AddThis code in the Edit HTML:

<script>
var linkwithin_site_id = 51258;
(function () {
var elem = document.createElement('script');
elem.type = 'text/javascript';
elem.src = 'http://www.linkwithin.com/widget.js?rand=' + Math.random();
document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(elem);
})();
</script>

After doing that, follow the 2nd Method so you can see the LinkWithin Widget after Read More.

The Envoy Saturday, August 22, 2009

I solved the problem. It appears that if you include the code in any one individual posts, the related posts widget appears on the main page too. After thorough scouring of my site, I managed to delete it all.

Coolbuster,  Sunday, August 30, 2009

@The Envoy, glad that you were able to fix it. If you need more help please don't hesitate to ask for it.

@Live The Best Life - Online, you're welcome!

Scott Hayne Thursday, March 18, 2010

I have had LinkedWithin installed for a while now and love it. Now I have changed how Wordpress creates my URL's for my posts. Now my URL's are http://www.scotthayneblog.com/postnamehere/ It used to be http://www.scotthayneblog.com/2010/02/postnamehere

Linkedwithin is still trying to reference the posts using my old URL names rather than the new ones. I have uninstalled & reinstalled. Any ideas??

Thanks!

Your words are your own, but you agree that I have the right to delete as I feel appropriate or necessary. - Admin
