"My Way" a song of death?

I had a casual conversation with my officemates during break time. The topic was about bars, partying and drinking. And then there was a time we talked about videoke (video karaoke or video sing-along). A colleague warned us that if we wanted to live longer, never sing "My Way" in videoke bars.

"My Way" is a song with lyrics by Paul Anka and popularized by Frank Sinatra. Is "My Way" really as song of death?

There was this feeling within me agreeing to my colleague's statement. Here's why. Sometime in 2001, the late ex-boyfriend of my ex-girlfriend was stabbed to death in a videoke bar in Manila after singing the popular song "My Way". The guy came from a province in Mindanao and went to Manila to take a board examination. He wasn't able to make it. He was dead a night before the examination day. It was so popular that a national television station brought the news about the incident. That same year, another man who sang "My Way" in a videoke bar in Davao City also suffered the same fate. It likewise became content of broadcasts and publications.

These stories had me looking for related topics about the song, and I discovered two.

Wikipedia already mentioned in an article: "My Way" is one of the most popular songs sung in karaoke bars around the world, to the point that it has been reported to cause numerous incidents of violence and homicides among drunkards in bars in The Philippines. view source

In Ted Lerner's Asia Times article: ".. The song "My Way" is perhaps the most preferred song when the drinks start flowing and the karaoke gets turned on. The song is so popular, and singing it is taken so seriously, that dozens have literally died because of "My Way." Perhaps someone laughed while a buddy was singing during a drinking spree, or someone didn't like the way the guy at the other table clapped after he tried to imitate Frank. It's always a ridiculously stupid reason but, no matter, out comes the fan knife or the pistol and wham!-it ends in a liquored-up flash, another senseless death due to "My Way." I wondered if Frank was aware that so many had died because of that song..."

Those lines from Mr. Lerner best explained it. Below, the words in red can also be interpreted (obviously) to a man's nearing death. Take a look:

"My Way" by Frank Sinatra

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which Im certain.

I've lived a life thats full.
I've traveled each and evry highway;
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, Ive had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, Im sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I've loved, Ive laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
No, oh no not me,
I did it my way.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

Would you sing "My Way" in videoke or sing-along bars?
