Survival 101: Get Rid of Any Kind of Virus

There isn't such a thing as a virus-free network. Seventy five percent (75%) of all personal computers in the world have viruses, and ninety percent (90%) of that fraction belongs to the home sector.

But how and why do home users get viruses at such a fast rate, that they can't even begin to obliterate every kind of malware? How would YOU, as a home user, defend yourself from these threats, as the dawn of 2009 is near? All these after the jump.

It's true folks, the information superhighway is infested with flesh corrupting security threats. Here and there -- virus everywhere. But how do they travel to and fro home PC's that don't even have access to the internet? The answer is simple: flashdrives. Flashdrives (or commonly called USBs) are the most vulnerable gateway of viruses.

The plot: You plug your flashdrive in an infected system (whether at work, school, or at the local cybercafe) > download some files > plug in your system at home > upload the files. Usually, you wouldn't even recognize the symptoms until your system slows down, and the Windows interface begins to malfunction. Shady alerts here and there, programs won't start here, system hangs there.

The solution is a free antimalware program that has been unacknowledged and overlooked for the past few years. I present to you Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware.

Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware (let's call it MBAM) is a free antimalware solution designed for a fast performance and streamlined scanning. It features a unique heuristics engine, which goes through running processes, registry keys, system files, and boot sectors at a very quick rate; after which it will ask the user to reboot while it works in the background. After the system restart, you will be assured of a clean and working PC.

Below are the steps on using MBAM, call it a first-timer's guide:
  1. Download MBAM from CNET.com.
  2. Fire up the installer, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. After the installation, launch MBAM. You should be greeted with a screen similar to the one below:

  • If you would like to do full-system scan, choose the 'Perform Full Scan' option. If you want a fast and hassle-free scan instead, choose 'Perform Quick Scan'. Click 'Scan'. You would see a screen similar to this:

  • Wait for the scan to finish. In case no virus is found, you will be presented with a screen like this:
  • Or, if a virus is found, one like this:


  • Click on 'Show Results':
  • In my case, MBAM found two (2) instances of Trojan.FakeAlert. Just click 'Remove Selected', restart your PC, and you are assured of a clean and productive workplace.
We would recommend doing this procedure at least twice a month (or when a symptom is felt).

Requirements:

You need the following to become an instant DJ.
  1. Computer;
  2. Component or any sound system;
  3. Baby plug to RCA plug;
  4. Danceable music, in mp3 or wave format, in computer hard disk or audio cd; and last but not the least,
  5. MP3 Tunes software.
Procedure:
  1. Download MP3 Tunes v1.8.2, click here.
  2. Install the software in your computer.
  3. After installation, add your mp3 or wave titles to MP3 Tunes.
  4. Using the baby plug to RCA plug, connect your computer's audio output to your component/sound system auxillary.
  5. Optional: set the equalizer and skin of MP3 Tunes. You can configure the settings by clicking the gear icon which is 'Options'.
Tips:
  • During playback, you can set the pitch/speed and mix the music tracks for a real party sound.
  • Optional: Convert your home or venue into an instant bar or club by installing some colorful lights.

Windows XP refuses death, gets extended life

The operating software that just won't die - that is Windows XP.
Microsoft is making an accommodation through a flexible inventory program that will allow distributors to place their final orders by January 31, 2009 and take delivery against those orders through May 30, 2009. Source
With Windows Vista yet to gain wide acceptance, Microsoft defers Windows XP license purchasing deadline to May 30, 2009.

This is good news to those who wanted to purchase a copy of Windows XP. You can still grab a genuine copy by the end of 2009. Others predicted that it will be extended again up to the second quarter of 2010 before Microsoft packs XP and phase it out.

For existing users, there's no need to worry because the extended support for Windows XP, which includes security updates among others, could last up to 2014.

On the other hand, debates have been heating up in forum discussions whether or not to place Windows XP as soon-to-be an obsolete software. Encouragements to Windows Vista upgrade are also increasing.

This one caught my attention:
I look at XP as a platform. I use it's basics, which will run on virtually any hardware very fast, and then us the lightest free utilities possible - about 20 or 30 of them - to bring it up to being the best OS possible that does everything I want in the WAY I want at zero financial cost.

Upgrade to Vista? It adds nothing I need at the cost of running slower on the same hardware. I'd be a fool to "upgrade".-Comment from matt2971

It might be better than Vista on your stone age hardware but Vista x64 is the best if you have the right hardware. I use Vista ultimate x64 in my home and have business x64 installed in our office and they rock. We have never faced any problems till now. - Comment from shellcodes_coder
They have good points, don't they? Basically, its really up to a user if he upgrades or not. This blogger, for example, is using XP since 2002 and have no plans of upgrading to Vista due to economic reasons. The reason why we can't upgrade our system is that the hardware goes along the OS upgrading. In simple words, we should be upgrading the hardware if we want to upgrade to Vista. And the challenging economic times prevent us to do so.

If a user sticks to XP or upgrade and go buy a genuine copy of Vista and the required hardwares, why not? It is always a matter of customer preference.

Search Rapidshare Files in Firefox

You don't have to download a software. You don't need to go to Rapidshare either because in the first place, Rapidshare does not have a search form.

In this guide, we will teach you how to put an add-on for you to be able to search Rapidshare files right in your Firefox browser.

How to:

1. We have not tested this on Firefox 3 so we will use Firefox 2. Open Firefox 2.

2. Go to Rapidshare Search Engine.

3. Below the "Search" button you will find the "Install search plugin web" link. Click it.

4. A notification will show. Mark/check the "Start using it right away" box and then click "Add". The plugin will be added to your Firefox browser automatically.

5. Type your desired Rapidshare file name and hit enter. You will be brought to the search results page.

How to Defeat a weaker version of Long Live Sowar Virus

A weaker version of Long Live Sowar Virus has infected millions of universal serial bus (USB) flash drives worldwide. It continues to spread on computers through flash drives.

The weaker version of Long Live Sowar Virus still has the same exploits made to infected computer except that it does not change the home page of Internet Explorer to Redtube. However, it still does disable access to Windows Task Manager, Registry Editor and Folder Options among others.

My computer has been infected by this virus just recently. A friend wanted me to copy files from his flash drive. Because we were in a hurry, I accidentally hit "Open files" upon insertion and the virus was automatically installed using its autorun capability. I learned that my computer was already infected upon hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del. As expected, it showed the "Task Manager has been disabled by Administrator" notification.

Do you have a similar experience?

Using the following method, you will be able to defeat this version of the Long Live Sowar Virus.

1. Disable Windows 'System Restore" Service. To do it, go to My Computer\Properties\System Restore, check Turn off System Restore on all drives, click Apply and OK.

2. If you still don't have it, download Trend Micro HijackThis.

HijackThis™ is a free utility which quickly scans your Windows computer to find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or other unwanted programs. HijackThis creates a report, or log file, with the results of the scan. Advanced users can use HijackThis to remove unwanted settings or files.

3. Install HijackThis. The installation will just take a few seconds to complete.

4. In the main window, click 'Scan'. It will show you the results of the scan.

5. Look for the following entries in the results:

6. Check the corresponding box and then hit the 'Fixed checked' button. IMPORTANT: Do not check other boxes so you will not mess up system files and settings. Close the HijackThis window.

7. Now, we are going use the latest version of Remove Restriction Tools.

8. In the main RRT window, click 'CHECK ALL' and then click "REMOVE". Close the window.

9. Restart your computer.

10. When you open it back, you will have access to all files and settings formerly restricted by the virus. To check press Ctrl-Alt-Del keys.

Smart Mobile Internet is Back

Was internet congestion brought about by the Christmas holiday caused downtime for Smart mobile internet?

Thanks to readers comments, we were able to track the downtime of the service. Specifically, Smart users, including this writer, were not able to use its mobile internet service from the 24th until the 27th of December.

According to feedback we got from other users, the cellphone service provider cut off its mobile internet service to give way to high demand on calls and text during Christmas. The feedback, however, was not verified.

Upon checking our mobile internet connection on the afternoon of December 27th, using Opera Mini 4.2 which we tweaked for faster and free internet, we found out that the service is back. This is good news because we can continue using the service for free whenever we want wherever we are, as long as there's a Smart signal.

Basic Guide: How to Easily Rip Music from Audio CD to MP3

You do not need to use a third party software to rip or grab music from audio compact disc (CD) to mp3.

In this guide, we will teach you how to easily do that using the readily available Windows Media Player.

Here is the step-by-step procedure:
  1. Go to Start > Windows Media Player.
  2. Go to Tools > Options and then click the 'Rip Music' tab.
  3. Default location is C:\My Documents\My Music but if you like it changed to a different location, click the 'Change' button and make your own desired folder where you can store the ripped music files. Additional option: click 'File Name' to set file naming convention to use.
  4. At the Rip settings, choose mp3 as your Format.
  5. Uncheck "Rip CD when inserted". It is better to do it manually so you get to choose what song should be ripped or grabbed.
  6. Check "Eject CD when ripping is complete".
  7. Set the slider to a Quality of your choice. The default setting (smallest size: 128 Kbps) is just fine.
  8. Click 'Apply' and then OK for the changes to take effect.

Read More Widget for Blogger

By default, blogger shows 20 posts in each page. It will just be fine for readers if your posts are short. Otherwise, they have to roll up or down to view completely the length of the page. It's inconvenient, isn't it?

Do you see the posts at the homepage of my blog? Each shows only a part of the whole entry we call a summary and visitors need to click on the "read more" link to view the whole article. This link does not only reduce the length of an entry to let the viewers quickly scan many posts before deciding which post to read in its entirety, but it also adds a professional look to your blog. The disadvantage of this Blogger hack is, it will take a few more seconds for the entire article to reload on your browser.

In order to add the "Read more" or "Continue reading" widget for Blogger, just follow these very simple steps. We made these easy to understand as possible.

Important: Before editing your template, make a back up copy.

Procedure:

1. In your Blogger Dashboard, go to Layout > Edit HTML and then mark/check 'Expand Widget Templates'.

2. To find some important codes, press Ctrl-F in your keyboard.

3. Look for ]]></b:skin> (or copy and paste this in the Find: box) and put the following code after it:

How to get Fast and Free Internet

This is for all you Smart mobile users out there. Did you know that you can browse the internet fast and for free using your mobile phone? Yes, you can!

We have a step-by-step procedure on how to access the web free of charge. It is actually a combination of procedures from Esato.com forum member dennevhyn_31 and our own self-made guide.

Procedure:

1. On your Smart cellphone, activate Smart GPRS and MMS. Click here for the how-to guide.

2. Afterwhich, you have to check if your internet profile on your mobile phone is set to "Smart Internet." Check the proxy settings of Smart Internet. If there is none, put 10.102.61.46 on the Proxy Address and 8080 on the Port Number.
  • You can also try using "Smart GPRS" if you don't have the Smart Internet data account.
  • Likewise, to double-check, go to Menu\Settings\Configuration. If the Default config. setting shows "Smart" and the Preferred access pt. is "SmartInternet", you are on the right track.
3. Download Opera Mini 4.2 from www.operamini.com then install it. You can download it to your computer and then transfer it to your phone. For Nokia users, the PC Suite is the best choice. If you're going to download it directly to your phone, you will be charged.

4. After installing Opera Mini 4.2, go to Menu\Tools\Settings\Network. Select "Socket" on the Protocol options then save it. For faster browsing speed, here's our guide.

5. Type opera:server on the address bar. This is to ensure that you have a working connection.

6. To make sure that you have set the Opera Mini server using Socket Protocol, open your Opera Mini 4.2 then go to Menu\Tools\Help\About. If the Proxy URL that will show there is socket://server4.operamini.com:1080 then you're good to go. If it says http://server4.operamini.com:80, check again the protocol settings by following step 4. This is to make sure that you will not be charged.

7. After making sure that you have step 6 done, try browsing the Internet and that's it. You will get fast and free internet.

Tip: If nothing happens after doing these steps. Try to load an All-Text 20 or higher, you will be connected. You can use all the load and still get free internet access.

Update: Smart has disable free internet access through the Socket protocol. What is working now is the HTTP protocol but is not free. =(
