How to Update the Canopy SM

Updated: 8/29/2009 - This method is for those who use the Canopy Subscriber Module (SM).

Warning: If done incorrectly, your Canopy SM will become unusable. This is provided as tested but there is no guarantee that during the process your SM will not encounter a problem which may be caused by human error, computer hang up, or accidental/intentional shutdown.

If you are hesitant to do this procedure, do not proceed.

Your computer will need to connect to the device being upgraded so set your TCP/IP properties in the Canopy SM page.
  • IP Address: 169.254.3.3
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
  • Use “root” (without the quotes) as the username, password is left blank.
Then in your LAN properties, make the following changes:
  • IP Address: 169.254.3.3
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
  • The other boxes should be left blank.
Assuming that the proper version of CNUT is installed and your desired update package is already saved in your computer, we may now proceed with the steps in updating your Canopy.

CNut and Update Package download from here

1. Open your CNUT (Canopy Network Updater Tool), highlight 'Network Root', right-click and then click 'Add Network Element', a window appears.

2. From the Element Type dropdown box select 'Subscriber Module (SM)', then in the Element Host Name(s)/IP Address(s), type your Canopy's IP address 169.254.3.3 and then click OK.

3. Make sure to select your SM by checking the box before it. Click 'View', and then click 'Refresh/Discover Selected Network Elements'.

If this is successful you should see info next to your SM that says 'Refreshed'. If CNUT can't access your SM, you may have problems following the steps. Read again.

4. With your SM still checked, click 'Update', then click 'Manage Packages'. A package Manager window will appear, click 'Add' and select the package file you saved earlier (if you are using the new CNUT version, it will ask for the *.pkg3 file; if not, it will ask for the *.pkg2 or *.pkg file). After selection, close the Update Manager.

5. With your SM still checked, click 'Update' followed by clicking 'Update Selected Network Elements'. Please be patient to wait for the update process to complete. It is normal for the CNUT to automatically reboot your SM, you don't have to worry.

6. There will be a notification if the update is successful, which you will see at the bottom of the CNUT notifications panel.

7. To connect back to internet, go to your LAN connection properties and click 'Obtain an IP address automatically' as well as 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'.
My Canopy SM software was updated to the latest version which is Canopy 9.4.2 SM DES.

Canopy SMThe biggest change I saw in the AP Evaluation list is that the RSSI counter has been removed. The general user interface and speed have slightly improved.
